Horšovský Týn has been an urban monument reserve since 1953. Between the historic town, the castle complex and the park, a place unfolds with distinctive sights, viewpoints and established paths.

Culture

The state castle and Horšovský Týn Chateau are among the town’s most significant sights. The Královská rokle educational trail is also one of Horšovský Týn’s attractions. At Republic Square, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul has a viewing tower. An annual event is the Anenská pilgrimage, which takes place every year at the end of July.

History

Horšovský Týn Castle was founded in the mid-13th century as a Gothic castle and belonged to the bishops of Prague. After the fire of 1547, the castle was soon rebuilt under John the Younger of Lobkowicz as a monumental Renaissance castle.

Nature

The chateau park of Horšovský Týn covers almost 40 hectares and is freely accessible from the town. Two ponds lie in the lower part of the chateau park, with walking paths running around them. Its appearance changed several times: the park began in 1550 as an Italian-style Renaissance garden, was redesigned as an English park in 1880 and transformed into a landscape park in 1905.

Paths

The viewing tower on Šibeniční vrch is freely accessible to the public all year round. From there, there are views of Horšovský Týn and its immediate surroundings, as well as of the entire Šumava Mountains and Český les. A cycling route near Horšovský Týn is approximately 100 kilometres long and bears the number 2141.
