Hlohová lies in a gently undulating landscape on the right bank of the Zubřina stream, just above its confluence with the Radbuza. The village occupies the upper part of a small valley formed by water flowing from Chmelnice into the Zubřina.
Landscape
Hlohovská tůň is one of the ten themed information boards along the “In the Footsteps of Jirásek’s Lucerna” educational trail. In the wider regional surroundings of Hlohová lies Běleč Mountain. In the immediate vicinity are Klítka Hill (Hlohovčice), Hora Hill (Staňkov-město), and Kamenná hora Hill (Holýšov).
Culture and History
The Church of St. Giles is a Baroque church built between 1764 and 1766. It preserves the presbytery of an older, probably Gothic church, as well as three stone floor slabs; one of them bears the coat of arms of the Videršpergár family.
The former fortress in Hlohová is first mentioned in written records in 1368. Parts of the moat and ramparts of the former fortress are visible in the cadastral area of Hlohová.
According to tradition, Pasecký mlýn served as the model for the mill in Jirásek’s play Lucerna. The Pasecký mlýn complex includes a mill, farm buildings, a bakery, and the remains of an enclosing wall with a chapel.
