Chanovice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The educational trail “Příroda a lesy Pošumaví” leads from the chateau grounds to the Chanovice open-air museum. The 2.2-kilometre route can be walked in both directions and is intended for pedestrians. It leads from the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the chateau grounds through the park, over Chlum Hill, to the open-air museum of folk architecture, the Chanovice Open-Air Museum. At nine stations, the trail provides information about notable plants, animals and the geological conditions of the surrounding area. A 31-metre-high observation tower stands along the educational trail; from there, views extend across the Šumava from Český les to Českokrumlovsko, as well as over Blatensko and Brdy.

Culture and History

Chanovice Chateau is a Baroque chateau surrounded by a park; a Gothic fortress originally stood on its site. Next to the chateau stands the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a Baroque building dating from 1751–1764 that partially preserves elements of the former Gothic sanctuary.

Folk Architecture and Crafts

The Chanovice Open-Air Museum presents historical forms of village housing, agriculture, domestic production and crafts from the second half of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. At the same time, it is a rescue project for endangered folk architecture structures in southwestern Bohemia. A visit outside regular opening hours is possible by prior arrangement for groups of 10 or more.

Traditions

Chanovice hosts the annual Den řemesel, a presentation of traditional crafts. The autumn Den tradiční potraviny is a regional festival in Chanovice.
