Ostřešany combines local history and art with a landscape of ponds, opportunities for observing nature, cycling tours and destinations for excursions in the surrounding area.

History and Culture

The oldest known written reference to Ostřešany dates back to 23 December 1340. The former name of the village, Wostřešany, probably originated from the expression “vostrých střech,” meaning “sharp roofs,” referring to the numerous pointed roofs found there.

House No. 11 in Ostřešany is associated with the painter Eva Filemonová; its façade bears original frescoes by the painter. The Ostřešany war memorial to those who fell in both world wars was created in 1934 by the sculptor Miloslav Baše and the architect Karel Řepa. It stands in the corner of a paved square area in a small park in front of the school and depicts an over-life-size statue of a kneeling wounded soldier. A cast-iron cross on a sandstone pedestal with a wrought-iron fence dates from the late 19th century.

Water Landscape and Nature

Ostřešany has a cascade of four ponds. A new path with a bound gravel surface runs around the ponds.

On the outskirts of Ostřešany, the Kozí vrch Ranch lies in the fields and includes a small riding club. A nesting site of sand martins in an old sand pit near Ostřešany has been monitored since 1981.

Exploring the Surroundings

Cycling tours around Ostřešany are suitable for leisure activities. A 700-metre-long cycle path connects Ostřešany and Nemošice. The nearby Nemošická stráň nature monument in Nemošice is a suitable destination for an excursion from Ostřešany.

Near Ostřešany, the civil defence observation post on Mikulovický kopec can be visited with a guide on its opening days.
