Litomyšl: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Litomyšl combines a rich cultural heritage with riverbanks, urban gardens, paths through Lesopark and a striking sandstone landscape in the surrounding area. In addition, there are unusual insights into music history and a festival where Czech, regional and international cuisine come together.

Culture

Litomyšl Castle is a Renaissance residence that combines Italian-influenced arcaded courtyards with Bohemian gables and sgraffiti. The historic centre of Litomyšl also includes an almost 500-metre-long square with burgher houses on narrow Gothic plots and characteristic arcades. On Josef Váchal Street, modern sgraffiti decorate the houses with motifs from Váchal’s Krvavý román.

Bedřich Smetana is also closely associated with the town. The Rodný byt Bedřicha Smetany is located in the former castle brewery, where Bedřich Smetana was born in 1824. The exhibition presents the composer’s life and most significant works in the authentic surroundings of the family apartment. The Rodný byt includes a music salon that presents Smetana’s most significant works with an animated film and projected images.

In the basement of the Regionální muzeum v Litomyšli museum, archaeologically excavated remains of a medieval gate, fortifications and burgher houses are presented. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum organises several temporary exhibitions every year.

Nature and paths

The Klášterní zahrady are a city park near Litomyšl Castle, surrounded by two Litomyšl churches. The gardens contain sculptures by Olbram and Jasan Zoubek and also offer views of the Litomyšl cityscape.

At Nábřeží Loučné, the riverbank is connected with a stone ford, a new suspension footbridge, folding footbridges and a viewing point by the river. There is also a public playground whose play elements are inspired by sound and music and which was opened to the public in 2017.

There is a path in Litomyšl following in the footsteps of Bedřich Smetana and leading to places from his early life. Lesopark Černá hora offers approximately 5 km of paved paths, a nature trail and three running routes of 1,200, 3,200 and 5,200 m. The paths and facilities provide recreational opportunities for walkers, runners and cyclists. Since 2025, the “Les” nature trail has included a total of 20 nature features; most are suitable in size for small children.

In the wider surroundings of Litomyšl lie Toulovcovy Maštale, a protected sandstone landscape covering 1,083.6 ha, with deeply incised gorges and bizarrely shaped rocks and canyons. There is a dense network of marked paths and circular hiking trails. VýhledNa, a 15-metre-high viewing structure made of two shipping containers, offers an unusual perspective of Litomyšl and the surrounding area.

Food and drink

At the Gastronomické slavnosti M. D. Rettigové, the public can sample Czech cuisine, regional specialities and international dishes in tasting portions. The festival is scheduled to take place over a weekend in May.
