Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce combines a remarkable church ensemble with archaeological traces of a fortified hilltop settlement, a hillfort with an outer bailey. At its heart is the “Church of St Peter and Paul”, a Romanesque church remodelled in the Gothic style in the 14th century.

Culture and History

The “Church of St Peter and Paul” is a filial church in Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce. It stands on the grounds of a former fortress; the former defensive ditches and ramparts around the church and cemetery have been preserved. The ensemble also includes an old bell tower with a bell dating from 1520 and a cemetery with a Baroque mortuary chapel.

A special detail can be found in the apse: a wall fresco depicting nine of the presumed twelve knights. Services take place according to the respective announcements.

Landscape and Trails

The Podolka stream flows through Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce. Blue- and white-marked trails lead from the “Church of St Peter and Paul” through the forest down to the Podolka stream. The easy “V procházkách” trail also continues through the wooded valley towards Tasovice.

Geology and Local History

Mining in the Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce quarry artificially exposed coastal lagoons from the Cenomanian period. Material from this quarry was used as a corrective raw material in cement production in nearby Prachovice.
