Křižanovice is located in the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area on the northern shore of the Křižanovice Reservoir. In the surrounding area, the Krkanka Nature Reserve extends along the Chrudimka Gorge from the Křižanovice Dam to the adjoining Strádovské Peklo Nature Reserve.
Landscape
In the vicinity of Křižanovice, the Krkanka Nature Reserve protects a gorge of the Chrudimka with frost cliffs, stone fields, scree slopes, boulder-strewn riverbeds, and a waterfall. The reserve thus encompasses various distinctive formations of the rocky river valley along the section between the Křižanovice Dam and Strádovské Peklo.
Hydraulic Structure and History
The Křižanovice Dam is a straight concrete gravity dam. A road runs along its crest. The hydraulic structure includes a small hydropower plant with a Francis turbine.
Visible remains of exploratory ore mining have survived near Křižanovice to this day. The first written mention of Křižanovice dates back to 1329.
Marked Trails
From the Křižanovice Dam, a yellow-marked trail leads north to Chrudim. From the Křižanovice Dam, the same yellow-marked trail leads south to Horní Bradlo. A green-marked trail also begins at the trail junction at the Křižanovice Dam; it is also an educational trail and runs through the Krkanka Nature Reserve.
