Culture and History

In Hradec nad Svitavou, St. Catherine’s Church is originally Gothic and was rebuilt after fires in 1673 and 1710. Its tower has retained its medieval character. The church was originally fortified and protected both the village and a merchants’ road that crossed the Svitava River near the church.

In the southern part of Hradec nad Svitavou stands the Trinity Column from 1725, an exceptional work featuring reliefs from the same year. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, restored in 1870, has also been preserved.

Another distinctive structure is the railway viaduct in Hradec nad Svitavou. The six-arch structure was built between 1847 and 1849. The local history of individual personalities also extends beyond the municipality: Father Engelmar Unzeitig, a clergyman born in Hradec nad Svitavou, was beatified in Würzburg on 24 September 2016.

Nature

The Hradecké rybníčky wetlands are considered the most valuable natural area in the municipality of Hradec nad Svitavou. Forty protected animal species have been recorded there, including nine amphibian species.

Trails and Transport

A yellow hiking trail leads through the cadastral area of Hradec nad Svitavou towards the Horecký hřbet ridge. In the southern part of the village, a facility for locals and tourists was also built in 2022, featuring covered benches and tables as well as a small educational trail.

Railway line 260 between Česká Třebová and Brno runs through Hradec nad Svitavou; several trains stop in the village every day.
