Culture and History

The Church of St. Joseph with the Calvary ensemble is a listed monument in Palonín. The church was built in 1828–1829 in the Neoclassical style; the Calvary ensemble dates from 1825 and is also designed in the Neoclassical style.

The history of the village encompasses several historical layers: the first written mention of Palonín dates back to 1353. Archaeological excavations near the village suggest that a Slavic settlement had already existed there since the 9th century. The painter and illustrator Stanislav Lolek, who illustrated the book Liška Bystrouška, is also associated with Palonín.

Another listed monument is Farm No. 36. It comprises two buildings around a wall with a passage gate; the farm includes a residential building, a retirement dwelling, and a courtyard with arcades, a barn, and stables.

Location and Landscape

Palonín lies at an elevation of 272 metres at the southern tip of the so-called Mohelnická brázda in the Šumperk District. The municipality covers 537 hectares of predominantly fertile soil. Its territory extends into the Morava River basin.

Skalka Hill is located in the vicinity of Palonín. The nearby area also includes Mlýnský vrch Hill (Bílá Lhota-Řimice) and Třesín Hill (Bílá Lhota-Měník).

The wider regional surroundings include Hrad Brníčko Castle and Husák Mountain. The memorial Pomník obětem 1. a 2. světové války and the chapels Kaple Panny Marie Lurdské and Kaple Panny Marie are also located in this wider regional area.

Things to Do

Cycle Route No. 6204 leads from Loštice through Palonín and onwards towards Červená Lhota and Bílá Lhota.

The Bílá Lhota Arboretum covers a three-hectare park area. It offers the opportunity to visit an alpine garden and an aviary with exotic birds, tour the château, take a walk by the pond, and play a game of giant chess.
