Bukovany lies at the foot of the last foothills of the Nízký Jeseník.

Landscape and history

In geographical terms, Bukovany is part of the RC4 Olomoucko – východ recreation area. Bukovany are first mentioned in 1131; at that time, Bishop Jindřich Zdík consecrated a new church dedicated to Saint Wenceslas.

Village character and monuments

Several original Hanakian farmhouses have been preserved in the centre of Bukovany. The Church of St Anthony of Padua was built in Bukovany in 1992. The Baroque Chapel of St Donatus, built in 1774, stands above Bukovany on an old road to the pilgrimage church on Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc; it is an immovable cultural monument and is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

The local collection of monuments also includes the T. G. Masaryk monument, which is considered a cultural monument of local significance in Bukovany. The original urban structure of the village square is regarded as an urban-planning value in Bukovany.

Routes and leisure activities

Bukovany is the second stop on the pilgrimage-themed educational trail Svatý Kopeček – Svatý Hostýn. The pilgrimage route is just under 50 km long and has 19 information boards, including one board in Bukovany.

Bukovany is also situated on the “Svatý Kopeček – Bazilika a ZOO” cycle route, which is classified as moderately difficult. From 9 August to 10 October 2026, a temporary pump track facility was installed in the car park near Koliba; it was intended for inline skates, roller skates, skateboards, BMX bikes and kick scooters.
