Markvartovice – Culture, Landscape and Village Character

Despite its proximity to the regional capital Ostrava, Markvartovice has retained its peaceful village character. At the same time, the written history of the village dates back to 1377. The village thus combines a clearly recognisable rural character with a historical connection that reaches far beyond its more recent development.

Geographical Setting

Markvartovice is located in the Hlučínsko region between the Opava River and the present-day state border with Poland, in the area between Opava and Ostrava. This location places the village in relation to the river landscape, the state border and the two cities at the same time. Those viewing the surrounding area on a map can follow these three reference lines separately and thereby understand Markvartovice’s distinct location.

Culture

The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity is a Baroque chapel dating from around the mid-17th century and is protected as a cultural monument. It was restored after a fire in 1945. Thus, Baroque architecture, heritage protection and a documented restoration history come together in the same building. Traditional events held throughout the year also include the Odpust. The building and the event represent different cultural occasions: in one case, the chapel itself is the historical reference point; in the other, it is a recurring date in the annual calendar.

Landscape

Markvartovice is surrounded by fields and forests and features plenty of greenery as well as a network of paths and cycling routes. There are bus stops in the centre of Markvartovice. Thus, the stops are located within the village centre, while the fields, forests and greenery shape the landscape around the built-up area. Paths and cycling routes form another separate structure. When planning a day, the village centre, the open surroundings and the various types of paths can therefore be considered separately.

Activities

Cycle Route C runs from Štípky through the built-up part of Markvartovice to Černý les. Local Cycle Route A runs north, above Petřkovice, Ludgeřovice and Markvartovice. The two routes therefore differ in their alignments and in the localities mentioned. The Areál opevnění Darkovičky educational trail begins in Markvartovice at the MO-S 16 Rozcestí infantry bunker. Another separate place for activities is the Pumprtack Marvartovice pump track, which was expanded from a small circuit into a larger pump-track facility. The cycle route, educational trail and pump track thus offer clearly distinct starting points and forms of exploration, without confusing their respective routes or functions.

The three movement options mentioned focus on different aspects: the two cycling routes are defined by their respective alignments and the localities mentioned, while the educational trail begins at a specific historical starting point. The pump track stands apart from these as an expanded facility with its own format. This makes it possible to distinguish the route alignment, themed trail and pump track as different ways of moving around Markvartovice.
