Filipovice: History, Mountains and Pilgrimage

History

Filipovice originated from a farmstead belonging to the nearby estate of Vikštejn Castle. Count František Josef Filip of Hodic purchased the farmstead in 1706 and subsequently founded a settlement named after him. The first documentary mention of Filipovice is found in 1707 in the parish register of Radkov.

In his 1836 topography of the Opava region, Faustin Ens also referred to Filipovice as “Philippdorf” and “Neudörfel”. Another historical trace leads to the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary: in 1867, the inhabitants began collecting donations for its construction. The chapel was probably built between 1902 and 1907 and consecrated in 1907; a more precise construction date is not known. The names handed down through history add a linguistic trace to the founding story. While the origins point to the farmstead and Count Filip of Hodic, “Philippdorf” and “Neudörfel” preserve the name used in a topography from 1836. At the chapel, civic initiative, the construction period and the consecration stand side by side as separate stages.

Landscape

Several terrain features in the surroundings of Filipovice can be distinguished by their form and spatial relationship. Přílet is a mountain near Filipovice, and so is Horka. The hill (Cikánské) [Štáblovice-Lipina] lies in the immediate vicinity. Stráž is a mountain in the wider regional surroundings of Filipovice.

Pilgrimage and Trail

West of Filipovice lies the pilgrimage site of Maria Talhof in a deep valley of the Melčský potok stream. A steep footpath with blue hiking trail markings leads from Filipovice to this destination. Regular pilgrimages to Maria Talhof have taken place again since the second half of the 1990s.
