Hlučín: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hlučín combines preserved buildings, regional history and a variety of ways to experience the town. Following its reconstruction from 2002 to 2007, Hlučín Castle became home to the Hlučínsko Museum, the municipal art school and the town library. At the Hlučínsko Museum, the permanent exhibition “Who Are the People of the Hlučínsko Region?” explores the history of the region. The modern interactive exhibition also includes virtual reality, complementing the historical themes with a digital form of interpretation.

Culture and History

South of the market square and near the town fortifications stands the Gothic parish church of St John the Baptist in Hlučín. The choir and nave are believed to date from the first half of the 14th century. The church is therefore one of the buildings through which the town’s earlier history can be traced. At “Cesta k nebesům”, a visit to the attic leads to the bells and to a lookout point with views over Hlučín and the surrounding area.

The stone town fortifications also form part of the historic townscape. They were built around 1530 to 1535. The wall, approximately 900 metres long, was around 4.5 metres high and about 2 metres thick. Twelve semicircular bastions reinforced the structure. A walking tour therefore focuses not only on individual buildings, but also on the town’s former defensive layout.

Experiences and Activities

Regular demonstrations of the defence of the fortifications take place at the Areál čs. opevnění Hlučín-Darkovičky. They are conducted in cooperation with units of the Czech Army. The site thus combines the preserved fortifications with a presentation of their military function.

The Wake-Park-Hlučín cable tow is 920 metres long and operates from May to September. At Hlučínské jezero, beach volleyball courts are available for recreational sports and organised tournaments. They can be used by prior reservation. The wake park and the lake therefore represent two independent, sports-related elements of Hlučín’s visitor offering.

Cycle Route No. 5, “Jantarová stezka”, also places Hlučín within a larger route network. The route runs from the Hať/Tworków border crossing via Ostrava, Přerov, Olomouc, Prostějov and Blansko to Hevlín. Its section through the Hlučínsko microregion runs from Hať via Darkovice and Darkovičky to Hlučín, and then continues along the Opava River to Ostrava.

Landscape

The area around Hlučín includes several named terrain features. Vinná hora is recorded there as a mountain. Davidka [Hlučín] is also located nearby and is recorded as a hill. In the wider regional surroundings of Hlučín lies Přílet, which is recorded as a mountain. Těškovice is another named terrain feature, recorded as a hill in the area around Hlučín.

The wider regional surroundings of Hlučín also include several places recorded as castles: Rzuchow - Zameczek, Wodzisław Śląski - Ruiny Baszty, Czernica - Dworek and Dzimierz - Zameczek. Together with the buildings, fortifications, museum and landscape features, these create a geographically structured overview of Hlučín and its surroundings.
