To this day, Dolní Životice retains the characteristics of what is known as a Waldhufendorf, both in its settlement pattern and in the original division of its fields. This traditional form of settlement provides the setting for the historic features associated with sacred buildings and technical monuments in the village.

Villagescape and History

Among the prominent historic traces are the remains of the water castle, also known as “Polákovo kolo”. The remains are located on private property. Their history is linked to a major event: the water castle and the village of Životice were destroyed by the Tatars in 1241. The history of the village therefore encompasses both the medieval settlement and the memory of the destruction of the castle and village.

Sacred and Stone Heritage

A monument in its own right is the Reconciliation Cross. The cross, 80 cm high and 60 cm wide, is made of coarse-grained sandstone and stands on a bridge over the Hvozdnice River. At the same time, it documents the administration of criminal justice in the 16th and 17th centuries. This monument thus combines its specific location by the river, its sandstone craftsmanship and a historical connection to the administration of justice.

The village’s sacred sites also reflect different purposes and periods of construction. The Chapel of St Salvator in Dolní Životice was built in 1769. The Chapel of the Divine Saviour is a Baroque pilgrimage chapel. In front of the entrance to the château grounds, there is also a copy of the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk on its original stepped pedestal. Chapels, pilgrimage architecture and religious sculptures are thus found in various locations and forms throughout the traditional villagescape.

Culture and Architecture

Another part of the local heritage landscape is the Dolní Životice Distillery. It is a technical monument and was one of the first electrified buildings in the region. Valuable artistic elements have survived there even after the façade reconstruction. The distillery thus brings together the building’s technical function, its importance for early electrification and its preserved decorative elements.

Count Camillo Razumovský commissioned the Church of the Most Holy Saviour in 1908. It is an eclectic historicist church with a dominant tower and an enclosing wall. Its date of construction, the named patron and its architectural features are among the clearly identifiable details of this building.

A Seasonal Detail

In addition to its historic and architectural features, Panský rybník is also part of the distinctive character of Dolní Životice. During the winter months, children and adults use the pond for ice skating. This seasonal detail complements the permanent monuments, churches and historic buildings with an activity explicitly associated with the winter months.
