Holenice is located in the Český ráj region; the municipality is part of the Český ráj UNESCO Geopark. Numerous natural, cultural, historical, and geological monuments are concentrated within a small area of Český ráj.

Landscape

Holenice lies in a picturesque valley on the Boučnice stream between Lomnice nad Popelkou, Rovensko pod Troskami, and Libuň. From the road from Veselá, there is a sweeping view of Holenice and the houses along the Boučnice stream.

The Holenický lom quarry is located on the northern edge of the municipality of Holenice, in a forest, at a sharp bend in the road from Veselá, on the right bank of the Boučnice stream. The Holenický lom quarry is a geological and paleontological site of national importance.

History

A manor farm originally stood on the site of the former hunting lodge; a wooden hunting lodge was later built there. The present-day masonry hunting lodge was built in 1870 by Count Aehrenthal for 6,000 gulden.

The former hunting lodge is considered the oldest building in Holenice and formerly belonged to the Hrubá Skála estate. The hunting grounds of the former lodge included 569 hectares of spruce forest.

In 1628, the village of Holenice came under Albrecht von Wallenstein, who incorporated it into the Hruboskalsko estate. Grinding garnets at home was formerly one of the most important sources of income for the inhabitants of Holenice.

Getting There

IDOL bus route 553 connects Rovensko pod Troskami and Lomnice nad Popelkou via Holenice. Route 553 serves stops named Holenice, Staré Holenice, and Holenice lom. Holenice can be reached by train via Jivany stop.
