Chrastava: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Chrastava combines urban history, technical monuments and signposted trails with special places in the surrounding area. Between museums, historic buildings, cycling routes and the start of a stage of the Stezka Českem, a diverse picture of the town and its surroundings emerges.

Urban History and Monuments

The Městské muzeum presents visitors with the older and more recent history of Chrastava and its surroundings. The museum also includes a mini-gallery with regularly changing exhibitions. The Chrastavské sklepení offers another approach to the past: the history of Chrastava and local legends are presented there in a hand-painted exhibition.

Technical and craft history is also visible in Chrastava. The Muzeum historické hasičské techniky displays hand-operated and motorised fire pumps and is described as the second-largest museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its collection includes a wooden fire pump dating from 1778. The museum is located on Bílokostelecká Street in T. G. Masaryk Park.

Führichův dům was built in 1802 and is a state-protected half-timbered monument. The second floor houses a small museum about the life and work of Josef Führich. The Church of St Lawrence is a Neo-Gothic building on a low hill above Chrastava; its interior contains an original organ. An Art Nouveau metal bridge crosses the Jeřice and is considered a state-protected technical monument.

At the centre of the square in Chrastava stands a Baroque sandstone fountain dating from 1707. A Baroque Marian column, also known as a plague column, dating from 1732 is located near the square.

Water and Historic Sites

The Vodní náhon water channel and the adjoining area of the old mill were designated immovable monuments in 2013. The Vodní náhon area is free to access; visitors can obtain the key at the information centre in exchange for a deposit of CZK 100. In 2021, a new visitor exhibition was set up there in the former area of an old mill.

Cycling and Hiking Trails

The cycling tour “PROJÍŽĎKA po památkách CHRASTAVY” is an easy bike tour just under 8 km long. Another cycling route leads from Chrastava to Kryštofovo Údolí and is 9 km long, or 21 km as a loop returning to Chrastava. It follows cycle routes 14, 20 and 21 to the area below the ruins of Hamrštejn Castle.

The third stage of the Stezka Českem in the Liberec area begins at Chrastava railway station. In the nearby area, a hand-operated transborder crosses the Lusatian Neisse; the transborder is accessible year-round. Also in the vicinity of Chrastava, Výhledy has a birdwatching viewpoint.

At Hamrštejn, the enclosing wall, the remains of two towers and the walls of the residential building have survived in the vicinity of Chrastava. The ruins of Hamrštejn Castle are located 200 metres uphill along a forest path from Machnín Hrad railway station.
