An early testament to the history of Český Dub is the Český Dub Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller. It was founded in 1237 together with the adjoining market settlement, opened to the public in 1993, and today forms a separate exhibition of the Podještědské Museum. Visits are only possible with a guide.
Culture and history
The Podještědské Museum was officially founded in autumn 1919 and opened to the public in 1921. The historic building stock also includes the Romanesque Chapel of St John the Baptist, one of the oldest surviving buildings in North Bohemia.
The originally Gothic Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit was founded as a parish church before the middle of the 13th century. Later, it also served as the convent church of the Knights Hospitaller.
The Neoclassical family crypt of Franz von Schmitt, with its chapel, was built in 1872–73 according to plans by the Viennese architect Karl Tietze and is richly decorated with paintings, stucco and sculptures. Blaschkova Villa was built in 1880–81 as a representative residential and garden villa.
Townscape
The Renaissance town hall of Český Dub, with high gables and an octagonal corner tower topped by an onion dome and lantern, was completed in 1565. The partially preserved town walls of Český Dub are among the town’s notable sights.
Schmittův zámek is not currently open to the public.
Nature and activities
Český Dub is surrounded by a romantic landscape with ever-present views of the Ještěd Ridge. The Krajem Karoliny Světlé tourist march has taken place annually since 1980.
In the publicly accessible leisure area of Český Dub, swimming in the body of water is possible at your own risk. There are several ski slopes and cross-country ski trails in the vicinity of Český Dub.
