Svatojanský Újezd: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Svatojanský Újezd is located in the Bělohrad Basin, three kilometres west of Lázně Bělohrad. A prominent landmark of the village is the Church of Saint John the Baptist: it is protected as an immovable cultural monument under catalogue number 1009153539; the protection has been in effect since 2 January 2006.

Culture and History

The church stands on the foundations of a wooden church from the second half of the 14th century. Its bell was cast in 1606 and is one of the oldest bells in the region. There is also a statue of Saint John the Baptist from 1902 in the village square.

The settlement structure also tells a story of the past. Svatojanský Újezd preserves the circular arrangement of the original agricultural farmsteads around the village square, which is now laid out as a park. The surviving log houses are regarded as examples of folk architecture.

The site of today’s “Okrouhlík” farmstead was once occupied by the medieval village of “Okrouhlice”, also known as “Okrouhlé”; it is mentioned for the years 1392 and 1603. At the “Bačálky” site above the “Okrouhlík” farmstead stood a medieval fortress called “Okrouhlík”, built before 1592 and mentioned in 1606.

Village Square and Landscape

The village square is home to the Liberty Linden, with a trunk circumference of 419 centimetres and a height of approximately 23 metres. It was planted on 14 May 1919 behind the statue of Saint John the Baptist in the village square. The residents meet at the Liberty Linden during the traditional “Setkání pod lipou” event.

A protected European ash stands in the northern part of the built-up area. The Svatojanský Újezd ash was designated as protected by the Lázně Bělohrad municipal administration in 2004. To the southwest of the built-up area, the 314-metre-high Újezdský kopec shapes the landscape. The highest parts of Svatojanský Újezd offer significant views of the village and the surrounding countryside.

Paths and Village Life

A class III road runs north–south across the village square, while a class II road passes outside the built-up area. The marked “Cesta Karla Jaromíra Erbena” hiking trail runs through Svatojanský Újezd. Existing field and forest paths connect the built-up area with the village’s natural surroundings.
