Bohdašín: Chapels, Rokole and Landscape

Rokole is a named Marian pilgrimage site in Bohdašín that originated at the site of an apparition of the Virgin Mary. In the built-up part of Bohdašín, a chapel dated 1826 stands at an intersection opposite house no. 47. Its prismatic bell tower defines the small structure and adds a clearly dated detail to the sacred history of the locality.

Landscape

Bohdašín lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains and offers views of the Elbe Lowland and the Giant Mountains.

Culture

Rokole is home to the Rokolský kostel, a Pseudo-Gothic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Rokole. It was built in 1930 and consecrated on 19 August 1945. The wooden Loreta in Rokole is an open-fronted covered passageway displaying images of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The church and the Loreta thus represent different forms of sacred design.

Opposite Rokole, a Stations of the Cross with cast-iron reliefs on stone pillars was erected in the forest in 1874. On the outskirts of Bohdašín, along the road to Slavoňov, there is also a sandstone group depicting Calvary. The Schönstatt Chapel in Rokole was consecrated on 19 July 1997; it is considered the first original Schönstatt shrine in Bohemia.

The Cesta manželů in Rokole follows the ponds and has 15 panels with texts and sculptures. Sacred sites, wayside stations and this route along the ponds link different stages of exploring the locality and landscape, without the religious buildings and the route losing their respective individual character.

History

Bohdašín formerly belonged to the Frymburk estate. Iron ore was mined around Bohdašín and Bydlo around 1446, and hammer mills were built. Frymburk Castle near Bohdašín was in use from the 14th to the 17th century. Its complex includes an 18.5 m-wide donjon on the castle promontory. The ruins of Frymburk Castle lie near Nový Hrádek on a high rocky promontory surrounded by the Olešenka River.
