Zvoleněves: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Several historical layers come together in Zvoleněves: the château and Church of St Martin, the former sugar factory, and the floodplain of the Knovízský stream lead from the history of the village to the landscape.

Culture

The present-day Zvoleněves Château was built in 1675 after the château built in the 16th century was completely burnt down along with the village during the Thirty Years’ War. The present château presumably stands on the site where the fortress of the estate’s original owners was located.

Above the present-day château, on the hill by the cemetery, a church dedicated to St Martin was built in 1352. In 1745, Anna Maria of Tuscany extended St Martin’s Church and equipped it with a massive tower. Its façade was reconstructed, and the windows were also replaced.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the south wing of the château was connected to the church by a covered passageway spanning the former moat and resting on three arches.

History

Emperor Ferdinand I had the original sugar factory in Zvoleněves built in 1859 as the owner of the Zvoleněves estate. Sugar production at the Zvoleněves factory was discontinued at the end of 2001. The main production building of the former sugar factory features tall windows spanning all the floors of the boiling house, architecturally distinctive gables with decorative elements in the shape of sugar loaves, and a structure with a water tower.

In the surrounding area, between Drnov and Podlešín, the Slaný–Drnov Cold War and Air Defence Museum is located in an underground former command post of the 71st Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.

Nature

The floodplain of the Knovízský stream in Zvoleněves is designated as an area with a characteristic landscape. The pond in Zvoleněves is used for recreation.
