Želenice: Apartments and Holiday Homes

In the centre of Želenice stands a listed church complex comprising a single-nave church, a wooden bell tower and a wall surrounding the cemetery. The church, bell tower and wall are protected monuments. The wooden bell tower is located in the centre of the municipality and, together with the Church of Saint James the Greater, is considered one of its landmarks.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint James the Greater was originally Romanesque and dates from the 12th century. It was later modified during the Gothic period and in the 17th and 19th centuries. Extensive restoration in 2013 enabled a more detailed examination of the largely preserved Romanesque nave. Its masonry consists of alternating courses of sandstone and marlstone blocks.

The Želenice bell tower probably dates from the 16th century and is considered a relatively rare example of a Renaissance bell tower. The hexagonal wooden tower stands on a stone base and has a mansard roof. It houses two bells cast in 1581 and 1613.

The invitation to Řížkobraní 2026 asks participants to bring schnitzels, pork belly, sweet dishes, pickled gherkins or spreads and taste them together.

Podlešínská skalní jehla, also known as “Žiďák”, is an eight-metre-high isolated rock east of Podlešín, behind the railway line between fields. It consists of sandstone or Upper Carboniferous Ledecká arkose.
