Zvěřínek lies on the eastern edge of Kersko-Bory Nature Park and combines a long local history with a diverse landscape.
Nature
Kersko-Bory Nature Park protects pine and birch forests on the gravel-sand subsoil of the Elbe lowlands, as well as open areas of the agriculturally shaped Polabí landscape. The surroundings of Zvěřínek offer ideal conditions for walks and cycling tourism. Near Zvěřínek, there is a sand lake in Sadská.
Culture and history
The first written mention of Zvěřínek dates from 1345. The village was originally called Zvěřinec; the name is said to refer to the large number of game animals in the surrounding forests. In 1525, Nymburk bought Zvěřínek from Bedřich, Burgrave of Donín.
The chapel of Zvěřínek stands in the center of the historically shaped village square in the southern part of the municipality and is part of a public park. The municipal bell tower on the road to Hořátev was built in 1865. Its bell was rung in the morning, at noon and in the evening, as well as for funeral tolling.
At the road junction at the entrance to Zvěřínek, a metal cross was erected on a stone pedestal in 1887. The war memorial in Zvěřínek was unveiled on September 20, 1936.
Water and change
The Černavka stream runs along the eastern side of Zvěřínek and flows into the Výrovka near the hamlet of Kopaník. The Černavka and Výrovka watercourses near Zvěřínek have been regulated since 1896.
The more recent economic history is also part of the local character: A brickworks built in 1909 laid the foundation for the Asbestos factory.
