Culture and history
The fortress in Vyšehořovice was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and served as the seat of the Vladiks of Vyšehořovice. Originally, it measured 30 × 40 metres, was surrounded by a high wall, and comprised a residential palace, utility buildings, and a tall tower; a moat protected the complex. Today, it is located on the grounds of a former agricultural operation, which is now a private farm, and is not open to the public.
The ruin of the Romanesque-Gothic Church of St. Martin is the oldest surviving structure in Vyšehořovice. The Vyšehrad Chapter founded it at the beginning of the 14th century, and it was consecrated in 1329. The original church consisted of a square presbytery with a ribless groin vault and a rectangular, flat-roofed nave; only a small part of the nave remains today.
The late Gothic-Renaissance bell tower is a massive four-sided structure with large Gothic pointed-arch windows and an attic parapet. The ruin of the bell tower was burned down by Swedish troops in 1677 and burned along with the church and a large part of the village.
U skal Nature Monument
The protected U skal Nature Monument is located in the southern part of the cadastral area of Vyšehořovice. It is a unique and exceptionally species-rich site of fossilized plants from the Upper Cretaceous period, of worldwide significance. U skal lies on the southwestern edge of Vyšehořovice on the left bank of the Výmola stream and can be reached via an unmarked forest path.
