Near Starý Vestec, Břístevská hůra lies between Prásce Forest and Starý Vestec along a yellow-marked hiking trail. From Starý Vestec, Břístevská hůra can be reached via a yellow-marked hiking trail. On its western and southern slopes, heat-loving steppe plant communities have survived among old fruit trees despite neglected maintenance. Near Starý Vestec, on Břístevská hůra, are the ruins of the Baroque Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, dating from the first quarter of the 18th century. Břístevská hůra offers sweeping views over the Elbe lowlands. The hiking route “Bříství–Břístevská hůra–Svatý Václav–Starý Vestec” is designated as a hiking trail.

History and Culture

Archaeological finds in the Starý Vestec area indicate settlement since the Early Bronze Age (2300–2000 BC); the site lies approximately 500 m south to southwest of the built-up part of the village. Late La Tène and Early Imperial-period settlements, as well as remains of the Únětice and Knovíz cultures, have also been documented in the Starý Vestec area. Starý Vestec was first mentioned in written records in 1320; at that time, the village belonged to Břevnov Monastery. From 1437, Starý Vestec belonged to neighboring Přerov nad Labem.

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in Starý Vestec was built in 1861 in honor of the patron saint of the Czech lands and is considered the most important cultural monument in Starý Vestec. The badly dilapidated Chapel of Saint Wenceslas was restored in 1993 at the municipality’s expense to its present form, without the original bell tower, and was reconsecrated. The monument to those who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918 in Starý Vestec was completely renovated in 1990.
