Panenské Břežany: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Panenské Břežany reveals itself through its chateaux, the Chapel of St. Anne and the memory of the Nazi occupation of the Czech lands. Historic architecture, exhibitions and a memorial site guide visitors through different chapters of the town’s history.

Culture and architecture

The Upper Chateau was built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries as an economic and administrative centre. The first floor houses the modern multimedia exhibition “Crime and Punishment”, which also includes a replica of the Pankrác guillotine.

The Chapel of St. Anne occupies a unique position architecturally. It was built in 1705–1707 according to plans by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, is one of the architect’s earliest works and is considered a prototype of his radial style. The chapel is also available year-round as a wedding venue.

Compared with other sites in the region of Central Bohemia and the surroundings of Prague, the Lower Chateau is of great architectural, artistic and urban-planning significance and is a unique building in the area.

History and remembrance

The Memorial to National Oppression and Resistance in Panenské Břežany commemorates the Nazi occupation of the Czech lands. The memorial’s current interactive exhibition is entitled “Crime and Punishment” (“Zločin a trest”).

The two chateaux are also connected with this history: During the Nazi occupation, the Upper Chateau became the seat of State Secretary Karl Hermann Frank. The Lower Chateau first housed Reich Protector Konstantin von Neurath and later Deputy Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich with his family.

The chateau park is part of the Memorial to National Oppression and Resistance in Panenské Břežany. The Lower Chateau and the adjacent park are not open to the public.

Visitor information

The chateau with the PNÚO exhibition and the Chapel of St. Anne are accessible to people with disabilities. Accessible toilets and a spacious modern lift are also available.

The PNUO library can be used on site after reserving the desired materials in advance. The PNUO’s research and educational programme is aimed at grammar-school students, students at secondary schools and older primary-school pupils.

Free parking spaces are available in front of the chateau. Buses must park in the municipal car park on Akátová Street.
