Nové Hrady: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nové Hrady Castle is a passage castle with two gates opposite each other and a deep moat. The Vítkovci founded it in the second half of the 13th century.

Culture and History

Following its reconstruction, the Buquoy interiors in Nové Hrady Castle can be visited, featuring numerous family portraits and mementoes of the family’s military glory. The residence of the estate official also showcases bourgeois living around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Another testament to the family’s history is the Buquoy Tomb. Eight coffins containing the mortal remains of members of the Buquoy family, including three married couples, as well as relatives from the Cappy family, are still located there. The complex consists of a crypt on the ground floor and a chapel on the upper floor.

The Church of St Peter and Paul in Nové Hrady preserves Early Baroque furnishings from the third quarter of the 17th century. The presbytery features a Late Gothic net vault, considered the most perfect of its kind in South Bohemia.

The Novohradská Forge is also one of the area’s special historic sites: it is a valuable example of a forge founded by Ferdinand Grössinger in 1719. Since 2003, the Rožmberk Society has organised various events, courses and activities at the Novohradská Forge, including traditional Easter gatherings, Bramborování na kovárně at the end of October and Čertovské kování at the beginning of December.

Nature

Terčino údolí is a national nature monument covering an area of 139.29 hectares. Its park landscape was created from 1765 onwards.

The vicinity of Nové Hrady includes Schindelberg, a mountain. The surrounding area also contains the mountains of Trosky, Vysoká and Zaječí.

Visiting

The Buquoy Tomb is open to the public during the designated visiting hours. Peter and Paul is open to the public during regular services. Guided tours of the church and monastery are possible only during the summer tourist season or by prior arrangement.

Wider Surroundings

The wider regional surroundings of Nové Hrady include Rosenhof Castle, a chateau, as well as the Lunkowitz Cross and Jäger Cross shrines. Geyersteine is listed there as a monument.
