Donji Lepuri: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Donji Lepuri can be explored through two specific themes: the architectural history of the Church of St Martin in Lepuri and the olive oil of LEPUR Olive Farm. Renting a holiday apartment in Donji Lepuri is a travel undertaking in its own right.

Culture

The Church of St Martin is located in Lepuri within a Catholic cemetery with a long chronological continuity. Its building was restored in the 17th and 18th centuries and erected on the remains of a structure from the pre-Romanesque period and the Early Late Antique period. Numerous high-quality pre-Romanesque stone carvings and epigraphic remains were discovered in the walls. Fragments of Early Christian architectural sculpture at the Church of St Martin date from the 5th to the 6th century. Archaeological investigation uncovered the ruins of an Early Christian church into which a medieval church had been incorporated. Single-nave chapels were probably built next to the Early Christian church, presumably after its construction in the Early Middle Ages, in the 9th century.

Early Christian and pre-Romanesque fragments of architectural decoration and liturgical furnishings were documented near the Church of St Martin in Lepuri and studied in connection with 9th-century stone-carving workshops. The site is considered one of the largest pre-Romanesque sites discovered in Dalmatia after the Second World War. The new Church of St Martin in Lepuri was solemnly blessed on 11 November 2001. The former Church of St Martin was located directly on the Benkovac–Skradin road.

The Zavičajni muzej Benkovac is housed in Kaštel Benković, a protected 15th-century building designated as an individual immovable cultural asset of national importance. The museum offers groups expert guided tours of the museum in Kaštel Benković.
