Culture and History

Near Nadin lies a protected group of three hillforts: Križova glavica, Nadin (Nedinum), and Vijenac. From 1409 onward, the historical border between Venetian-controlled territory and Croatia ran through the area via Nadin and Gornje Biljane; Nadin was on the Venetian side.

During the Liburnian period, Nedinum was a hillfort, while in Roman times it was the center of a municipal community. Nadin already appears in the works of the ancient writer Pliny the Elder and on the Peutinger Map (Tabula Peutingeriana). The city walls of Nadin bear witness to the area's rich history and to settlement dating back to Roman times. Preserved are remains of Roman city walls built from large blocks.

The local history also includes the parish church of Saint Anthony of Padua, built in 1878.

Landscape and Trails

Nadin lies above the extensive Nadinsko polje, the Nadin Field. A Roman road from Jadera (Zadar) to Burnum near Ivoševci close to Knin passed through the village.

A modern cycling route also passes through Nadin: the route is called “In Search of the Medieval Fortresses of Karin, Nadin and Kličevica and the Gorge of the Karišnica Stream”.

There are no signposts or information boards for the group of hillforts near Nadin.

Wine and Local Events

The Vina Vinketa winery is open to visitors year-round by prior arrangement. Traditionally, a tasting of young wines and olive oils takes place in Nadin at the beginning of December, around St. Nicholas Day.

The Wider Regional Area

In the wider regional area around Nadin, the archaeological site of Asseria lies near Podgrađe, about one kilometer south of the present-day village. It is a Liburnian-Roman hillfort settlement. Preserved features include city walls up to seven meters high and 3.20 meters thick, seven city gates, funerary monuments, Late Antique burials, and buildings.
