History and culture
The Neolithic archaeological site of Barice in Smilčić is attributed to the Danilo culture; ceramic fragments found there may have belonged to an altar-like object. Barice in Smilčić is an extremely important Neolithic archaeological site, but it is not visible on site, has not been prepared for visitors, and is not open to visitors.
The Smilčić rondel probably belongs to the late Danilo phase. It consists of a system of several ditches connected to further enclosures at the site. In 1923, a 3,000-year-old vessel was found in a grave at the Zemunjača archaeological site in Smilčić.
The historic centre of the village, known as “Centar naselja Smilčić”, is predominantly characterised by traditional buildings; tourist signage is available there. The Crkva Gospe od Zdravlja in Smilčić is in operation, has been restored, and is regularly maintained. The Orthodox Crkva Sv. Mihovila in Smilčić has also been restored and is in operation.
The estate and agricultural complex in Smilčić dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and is used for the production of wine and liqueur.
Viticulture
Wine is produced in Smilčić. The vineyards of Vina Figurica were established in 2003 and cover 8 hectares, with more than 35,000 grapevines across five grape varieties. Using grapes from its own production, Vina Figurica produces white, red, and rosé wines.
Visitors to Vinarija Vina Figurica can tour the wine cellar, where the wines mature in wooden barrels.
Cycling route
The 52-km Via Magna cycling route runs via Benkovac, Kula Atlagić, Korlat, Gornje Biljane, and Smilčić to Donji Karin, and then returns to Benkovac via other places.
