Culture and History
Starigrad-Fortica is a prominent monument of military architecture dating from the late 14th century. Bastion extensions were added in the second half of the 16th century. The Staro Omiško cemetery was established as the town cemetery in the 16th century. The present-day parish church in Omiš was built and fully furnished in the first quarter of the 17th century.
The permanent exhibition at the Omiš Town Museum displays archaeological, cultural, and historical artefacts from the area. The museum is located next to the Eastern Town Gate at the entrance to the old town and organizes creative programmes and workshops for children.
The 13th-century Mirabela Fortress served the pirates of Omiš as a lookout point over the Brač Channel. It can be reached via stairs from the main gate of the Parish Church of St. Michael and offers a view over Omiš.
The Festival of Dalmatian Klapa was founded in 1967 and is held annually in Omiš. It contributes to the preservation of traditional klapa singing and Croatian cultural heritage. In July, the festival fills the streets and squares of Omiš’s old town with Dalmatian klapa music.
Nature and Water
The Cetina Gorge is a protected natural landscape. River activities there include canyoning, kayaking, rafting, panoramic boat trips, and walks along the riverbank. Fortica is more than 500 years old and overlooks Brač, Hvar, Šolta, and the Cetina Gorge.
At Radmanove mlinice, an old mill remains a visitor attraction in the Cetina Gorge. The sandy beach of Velika plaža is within walking distance of Omiš’s old town. At Velika plaža, visitors can rent jet skis, boats, and kayaks, as well as use water trampolines, pedal boats, and a beach volleyball court.
Events and Activities
The Spring Trekking Cup is a series of hiking and trekking marathons held every spring around Omiš. The zipline adventure in the Cetina Gorge uses 2 kilometres of cables; some sections run more than 100 metres above the ground.
Gusarski dan is an all-day summer programme for all generations and takes place several times during the summer. The programme includes pirate activities for children, guided tours of the Omiš Town Museum and Mirabela Fortress, a pirate parade through the centre of Omiš, and an evening concert.
Culinary Connection
Poljički soparnik is a traditional dish of Poljica and part of Croatia’s intangible cultural heritage.
