The Municipality of Raša combines a distinctive mining history with architecture, a hiking trail and diving opportunities. Raša itself lies in the narrow valley of the Krapanski potok stream, a tributary of the Raša River, about 2 kilometres from the sea. Raša’s mining history and distinctive architecture
Raša was built between 1936 and 1937 as a planned mining town, based on designs by architect Gustavo Pulitzer Finali. The Raša mine employed more than 10,000 miners from 1928 to 1966. These time periods show that the history of mining extends beyond the years when the planned town was built. Visitors interested in this heritage can explore it in two different ways: Centar Arsia presents the town’s mining heritage in a small museum on Raša’s town square. Kova Experience offers guided tours of the mine. Visitors enter the mine and experience a day in the life of a miner.
The Church of St Barbara also illustrates the connection between architecture and mining. This modernist, rationalist building has a 25-metre-high tower. Its shape resembles an upside-down mining cart, while the bell tower is reminiscent of a miner’s lamp. This is a striking architectural feature for anyone interested in the town’s history. Centar Arsia is accessible to people with disabilities and people with reduced mobility.
The Church of St Lucia in Skitača offers a different historical perspective. Built in the early 17th century, it is a single-nave Baroque church. Together with the modernist Church of St Barbara, it creates a clear contrast between buildings from different periods and architectural traditions. A cultural itinerary can therefore include both the planned mining town and the older church in Skitača.
Diving, hiking trail and views
At Zidovi Sv. Marine, three reefs lie below the pebble beach. They drop directly from the beach into the open sea to a depth of 55 metres. The site offers numerous dives for divers of all levels. For planning your trip, this means that those looking specifically to dive will find a different kind of vacation here than visitors whose stay is focused primarily on mining history or churches.
On foot, the Bella Vista hiking trail follows a white path through Gora Glušići to Skitača. From there, the route offers views of the Kvarner. This provides a hiking route as a separate option alongside visits to Raša. Getting to the Rt Crna Punta lighthouse also matters: it is best reached by boat.
