Holiday apartment in Foča: rivers, mountains and Sutjeska

Foča is known for rafting on the Tara and Drina rivers. The final 25 kilometres of the Tara’s course run through the municipality of Foča.

Nature

The municipality of Foča encompasses 17 rivers and streams with gorges, clear water and fast-flowing currents. It is also home to the high mountain ranges of the Dinaric Alps: Maglić, Zelengora, Vučevo, Volujak, Bioč and Ljubišnja are considered a challenge for hikers and mountaineers. There are seven glacial lakes on Zelengora. Because of their exceptional beauty and glacial origins, they are known as the “eyes of the mountains”.

Another natural area is the Perućica primeval forest, a protected area covering approximately 1,230 hectares within Sutjeska National Park. The Skakavac waterfall, which is 75 metres high, is located there. The earth pyramids in Pirni Do are also among the municipality’s distinctive landforms. They lie at the ninth kilometre of the old road towards Miljevina and Sarajevo. The natural process that forms these earth pyramids is still continuing today.

Water

Fishing takes place in the Drina, Tara, Piva, Ćehotina, Sutjeska and Bistrica rivers in the municipality of Foča. The rivers also offer opportunities for rafting, canyoning and kayaking. A canyoning tour through the Hrčavka Canyon in Sutjeska National Park is 13 kilometres long, takes five to six hours and is considered moderately difficult.

The central part of Sutjeska National Park is located approximately 20 kilometres from Foča and can be reached via the Belgrade–Višegrad–Foča–Tjentište–Trebinje–Dubrovnik main road. Bicycles can be rented at the tourist information centre there; paved paths through the natural surroundings can be used for cycling and extend for 48 kilometres. The Zelengora Mountaineering Club organises one-day mountain tours and excursions in the Zelengora area with professional guides and experienced mountaineers.

Culture

The medieval burial site of Mramor is located in Vrbica near Foča. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards” and bears the identifier 1504-018. In the centre of Foča, on the right bank of the Ćehotina River, stands the Church of Saint Sava. It covers 1,500 square metres.

A museum in Foča was founded in 1956. Its exhibitions cover the ethnographic collection and the history of Foča, the National Liberation Struggle and Dr Risto Jeremic. The museum also includes a memorial room for fallen soldiers of the Army of Republika Srpska.

Cuisine

Specialities in the Foča area include veal roasted under a bell and lamb cooked in milk. The traditional bell is a metal lid under which the meat is prepared.
