Holiday apartment in Konjic: Old Bridge, Neretva and mountains

In Konjic, impressive cultural history, traditional craftsmanship and active experiences along the river and in the mountains come together. Tito’s Bunker, also known as ARK D-0, is located in Konjic and is used as a museum for tourism purposes. The facility was built in complete secrecy over a period of 26 years between 1953 and 1979. Visitors can take part in a guided 90-minute tour.

Culture

The Old Bridge of Konjic is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and an outstanding example of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. It was originally built in 1682 as a pious foundation by Ali-aga Hasečić. The Tekijska-Mehmed-Čauševa Mosque is also designated a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, having received this status in March 2006. It is located in the inner city zone of Konjic on the left bank of the Neretva, around 150 metres upstream from the Old Bridge. As the only domed mosque, it is considered the most architecturally valuable mosque in Konjic.

The Konjic Heritage Museum is located in the historic city centre on the left bank of the Neretva, next to the Old Bridge. It preserves and conveys the cultural and historical identity as well as the cultural and historical heritage of the city of Konjic. At the same time, it serves as a venue for cultural events, presentations, exhibitions and other activities. The birthplace of Zuko Džumhur houses authentic furniture made by woodcarvers from Konjic and decorated with traditional motifs.

Another focus is the Konjic Woodcarving Museum. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting Konjic woodcarving, whose cultural heritage has been included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Konjic woodcarving is a craft with a tradition of more than a hundred years and forms part of the culture of the local community; it was added to this UNESCO list in 2017. The renewed exhibition provides insights into the history of woodcarving, its masters, its transmission across generations through families and its development into a contemporary creative expression. The renewed museum also includes a small demonstration workshop for woodcarving. In Varda Park in the centre of Konjic, stone monuments are displayed on the left bank of the Neretva in a landscaped park.

Nature

The nearby Boračko Lake is located around 20 kilometres from Konjic. It can be reached via a paved road and offers opportunities for swimming, relaxation, leisure activities and fishing. The mountains around Konjic have marked trails, mountain huts and houses, as well as organised hiking tours. Mount Prenj, which is accessible through Konjic’s hiking offerings, lies on the long-distance Via Dinarica hiking trail.

The Vrtaljica Trail leads into a protected botanical reserve made of dolomite. Field studies recorded 360 plant species there.

Active experiences

The Via Ferrata and climbing activity is located at the Visit Konjic Outdoor Resort, Mladeškovići 4, Konjic. All equipment is provided, and no prior climbing experience is required. A steel cable runs along a 12.5-metre-high climbing route on artificial rock.

A rafting route runs along the Neretva from Glavatičevo to Konjic. The route is approximately 23 kilometres long and takes around five hours. Rafting on the Neretva near Konjic includes rapids, secluded beaches and a stop at a waterfall among the experiences described. Canyoning takes place in the canyon of the Rakitnica River in the area around Konjic and combines swimming, diving, climbing, walking and jumps into the water.
