Neum is located on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only coastline. The town combines an extensive coastline with beaches, bays, water sports and traces of a long cultural history. As a result, different aspects of the town come together during a stay: the sea with its bathing spots, religious buildings, archaeological evidence and routes through the surrounding area.

By the Water

Neum has more than 20 kilometres of coastline with a variety of beaches. Four central town beaches are located directly along the waterfront promenade. These beaches are pebble beaches with gently sloping access to the sea. Tiha Luka Bay is suitable for swimming. Neum Bay is described as peaceful and crystal clear. Recreational diving is also available in Neum and is supported by members of the local diving club.

Culture

The Neum Summer Festival is a series of cultural and entertainment events held annually in Neum. A historical landmark can be found in the village of Gradac: the Catholic Church of Saint Anne was built before 1619 and is considered one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in this part of Herzegovina.

Religious history is also present in old Neum. The Church of Saint Anthony is regularly used for masses and religious ceremonies, especially in summer. The archaeological exhibition at the Neum Museum includes the helmet of an Illyrian warrior. It comes from a grave discovered during construction work on the modern Neum–Stolac road.

History

In the wider area around Neum, the old town of Hutovo is considered an important cultural and historical landmark. The hinterland of Neum is home to numerous medieval stećak necropolises, some of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thus, the historical spectrum extends beyond the town’s churches and museum into the landscape of the immediate and wider surroundings.

Routes

The Camino Dubrovnik is approximately 145 kilometres long and divided into seven sections. The Ćiro Trail is a cycling route from Mostar to Dubrovnik.
