Čitluk combines Brotnjo’s long wine tradition with vibrant culture, religious customs and events that shape the town throughout the year. Vineyards, wine cellars, processions and regional festivals create a multifaceted picture of the municipality. The location is also clear: Čitluk lies on the road between Mostar and Ljubuški.

Culture

An important cultural hub is the Kulturno-informativni centar Čitluk. It emerged from the Narodni univerzitet Čitluk, founded in 1962, and organises cultural events in the municipality, such as the “Dani berbe grožđa”, performances, exhibitions and workshops. The centre also includes the Narodna knjižnica, which offers readers more than 9,000 titles.

The local cultural heritage becomes particularly visible during the “Dani berbe grožđa”. There, cultural associations present visitors with part of the regional heritage, while Brotnjo is also highlighted as an area with numerous wineries. The event has traditionally been held in Čitluk since 1955. It takes place in September, specifically in the first week after the church feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and lasts up to three days.

Wine and Regional Tradition

In the wider regional area around Čitluk, Brotnjo is regarded as a wine-growing region with a long history of grape cultivation and wine production. Blatina and Žilavka are among the most popular grape varieties there. Vinarija Čitluk plays an important role: Its production facilities are located in the centre of Čitluk and include a tasting room for up to 100 people. Overall, Vinarija Čitluk produces more than 50 wine and spirits labels.

The “Kušanje mladog vina” event also draws on this tradition. The Čitluk branch of Matica hrvatska organises it at Hotel Brotnjo, where visitors are offered young wine from Brotnjo for tasting. In the wider regional area around Čitluk, Župa Gradnići is also regarded as the oldest parish in Brotnjo and is home to the oldest wine cellar in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Processions and Faith

Religious traditions are also part of the town’s public life. A traditional procession with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary takes place in Čitluk. The traditional Marian procession leads from the votive statue at the entrance to the town to the parish church of Krista Kralja. The Župa Krista Kralja in Čitluk celebrated its 100th anniversary. During this celebration, the foundation stone for a new parish church in Čitluk was blessed.

Cycling and Physical Activity

The cycling tour “Biciklom kroz vinograde i podrume Brotnja” offers a special combination of wine landscapes and activity. The Biciklistički klub Brotnjo and the Municipality of Čitluk organised it as part of the “Dani berbe grožđa”; the documented edition was the fourth of its kind. The tour through Brotnjo’s vineyards and wine cellars began on the grounds of Vinarija Čitluk and was easy enough for young participants to take part as well.

The Gradski stadion Bare can be used for walks and other activities outside a specified period. The “Memorijal Bože Gagro” is described as the athletics competition with the longest event tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 20th edition of the international athletics competition had been announced.
