Blagaj – Holiday Apartment Between Culture and Nature

Blagaj combines culture, nature and history with an unusual waterscape. Around the Buna Spring are important remnants of the Ottoman era, a distinctive fortress and a river environment home to rare species.

Culture

On the right bank of the Buna Spring stands the Blagaj Tekke. Its complex was probably built by 1520 at the latest. The complex preserved to this day includes a musafirhana and a turbe. The Blagaj Tekke at the Vrelo Bune is also home to a traditional dervish Mevlud tradition.

High above the town lies the fortress of Blagaj, Stjepan grad, on a natural, level area above steep cliffs to the south, west and north. Its irregular polygonal layout is adapted to the terrain. The complex includes seven square towers, a projecting corner and an entrance to the east. Stjepan grad is regarded as an independent territorial unit.

The Velagić House complex is also one of the town’s defining historic buildings and is considered one of the most valuable groups of its kind in Herzegovina. The historic area of Blagaj extends along the Buna from the Leho Bridge to the source of the Buna.

History

The urbanisation of the settlement of Blagaj as it is known today was shaped in the second half of the 15th century during the Ottoman period. Blagaj’s urban structure took shape in the 16th century. This chronology shapes the historic character of the town just as much as its preserved building complexes and fortress.

Nature

The Buna is a short river with exceptionally clear, high-quality water. It provides a habitat for rare and endemic species such as the softmouth trout, nase carp and marble trout. The Buna Spring is considered an outstanding example of an underground karst river and carries approximately 30 m³ of water per second.

The Vrelo Bune is considered one of the largest springs in Europe. A 240-metre-high rock cliff rises above the Blagaj Tekke. Water, karst and rock therefore jointly shape the landscape around the spring.

Visitors can take a boat into the cave at the source of the Buna; knowledgeable guides are available. Free parking spaces are available near the entrance to the Blagaj Tekke.
