Holiday apartment in Prozor – Old Fortress and Ramsko Lake
Prozor combines a distinctive fortress complex with a landscape shaped by mountains and bodies of water. The Old Fortress of Prozor is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its fortifications date from the late Middle Ages and the Ottoman period. The protected area is intended for public access as well as educational and cultural purposes. The fortress stands on the rocky Grad hill above the confluence of the Prozorčica and the Kraljevac stream.
Landscape
Prozor lies between Makljen at 1,370 m, Kolivrata at 1,174 m, the slopes of Vran at 2,074 m and Raduša at 1,456 m. The terrain around Prozor consists of limestone and dolomite rock. These geological formations shape the area just as much as the surrounding mountain ranges and give the landscape a clearly recognizable character.
Water and activities
Ramsko Lake is located in the upper Rama Basin in northern Herzegovina, in the area of today’s Prozor-Rama municipality. The lake is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Raduša, Makljen, Ljubuša and Vran. Sport fishing is practiced in the waters of the Prozor-Rama municipality, including at Ramsko Lake and on the municipality’s rivers. The “Cycling through Rama” program includes the marked Prozor–Here–Uzdol–Prozor cycling route.
Šćit lies 10 km west of Prozor. A road approximately 2 km long leads over an artificial dam to the shore of Ramsko Lake. This links the location, the connection via the dam and the reference to the lake within the same landscape.
Culture
Šćit is home to the Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Assumption of Mary, which together form a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Ethnographic Museum in Šćit is housed in the old Franciscan monastery building, erected in 1857. Its exhibitions convey the life of the people of the Rama region through traditional crafts, agriculture, means of transport, domestic culture and textile production.
Prozor also brings together various testimonies to the region’s history. The Čaršijska Mosque is on the provisional list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Sahat-Kula dates from around 1700. The stained-glass windows in Prozor parish church were created by the academic painter Ante Mamuša. The Prozor parish was founded in 1906, and its new parish church was completed in 1968.
Archaeology
On 15 October 2025, the first archaeological exhibition in the Prozor-Rama municipality was set up at the entrance to the municipal building. In addition to finds from sites in Rama, the permanent exhibition “New Archaeological Research in Rama” includes material from the Prozor site. On weekdays, the stated visiting hours for this exhibition were 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
