Holiday apartment in Bugojno: Valley, Mountains and Cultural Heritage

Bugojno lies in the expansive, fertile Skopaljska Valley and belongs to a hilly and mountainous region. The town is surrounded by densely forested, conifer-rich mountains, meadows and the fish-rich Vrbas River. Thus, the townscape and its immediate surroundings bring together landscapes, archaeology, religious buildings and a diverse cultural programme.

Culture and History

The history of the area goes back a long way: archaeological finds in Bugojno attest to continuous settlement from the Bronze Age through the later Iron Age. In Roman times, the fortified municipium Ad Matricem existed here. Bugojno was also an important crossroads of Roman roads leading from Dalmatia and Herzegovina to Central Bosnia and Pannonia.

The designated historic sites include the archaeological area of Crkvina (Grudine) in Čipuljić, Municipality of Bugojno, as a national archaeological monument; the Rustempašića Tower in Odžak near Bugojno as a national historic architectural monument; the old town of Vesela Straža in the Municipality of Bugojno as a national historic area; and the Malkoč and Skenderpašić mausoleum complex in Kopčić, Municipality of Bugojno, as a national monument.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is also part of the town’s cultural profile. It was built in 1693 and is one of the oldest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thus, Bugojno combines a clearly dated Ottoman architectural history with considerably older traces of settlement.

Cultural Life

The Teatarski festival BiH FEDRA was revived under this name in 2006 and takes place every year in Bugojno. FEDRA has a national character and collaborates with similar festivals in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Macedonia. The organiser is KSC Bugojno, which, in addition to the Teatarski festival BiH FEDRA, also organises gatherings of puppet and marionette theatres in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bijenale of Yugoslav Puppet Art, the Bugojansko likovno bijenale, Bugojansko proljeće and the Bugojanska vaza.

Hiking

Several described routes lead through the mountainous surroundings and connect Bugojno with Planinarski dom Duboka and Kukavičko jezero. Planinarski dom Duboka is located at 740 metres above sea level. A marked, moderately difficult trail via Vrpeć–Podovi reaches Planinarski dom Duboka on foot in about four hours. From Duboka, a marked gravel path leads for approximately 13 kilometres to Kukavičko jezero, taking about three hours on foot.

For longer tours, the Bugojno–Koprivnica–Stožer–Kukavičko jezero–Mračaj–Planinarski dom route is listed as taking eight hours. The Bugojno–Vrpeć–Vrpećki podovi–Tahirova luka–Planinarski dom route and the Bugojno–Ljubnić–Kalin–Rostovo route are each listed as taking four hours. At the Zlatarica rest area, the site was thoroughly cleaned; new benches were also installed.

Cycling

For 24 May 2026, the traditional Bugojno na dva točka cycling tour was announced in Bugojno for nature and leisure enthusiasts on the occasion of Municipality Day. The main route of the Bugojno na dva točka cycling tour announced for 2026 was intended to lead to Kukavičko jezero and cover approximately 25 kilometres in total.
