Kreševo combines well-maintained and clearly marked mountain trails with a landscape of old forests, mountain pastures, and clear streams and rivers that have carved deep gorges. The trails are suitable for hiking, trekking, and mountain biking.

Nature

The geological features of Kreševo include Oberska Cave. It is a protected geological monument and is connected with the region’s medieval mercury mining and natural heritage. Oberska Cave can be reached via a forest path from the village of Vranci.

Culture

The historic urban area of Kreševo preserves a characteristic medieval town structure. At the Museum of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Catherine, visitors can also trace the connection between crafts, natural history, and history: The museum extends over three floors and includes, among other things, archaeological, sacred, mineral, and crystal collections. It also features a complete traditional blacksmith’s workshop with bellows, a forge, anvils, hammers, and other metalworking tools.

The library of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Catherine also preserves a remarkable testimony to the history of mining and metallurgy. It holds an edition of “De re metallica” by Georgius Agricola, printed in Italy in 1657. The 477-page work deals with mining, geology, and metallurgy, is divided into twelve parts, and contains illustrations.

A distinctive local craft tradition is decorating eggs with metal fittings, which is still practiced in Kreševo. The decorated eggs are considered valuable local souvenirs and symbols of good luck, maturity, and new life.

Activities

The mountain bike club BBK Kreševo organizes cycling tours and events and develops mountain biking infrastructure in the mountainous areas of Kreševo. In addition, the geopaths connect geological sites with tourist attractions and allow visitors to explore Kreševo’s geological heritage.

Minerals and crystals are also the focus of the association “Kreševski citrin.” It offers interested visitors the opportunity to visit its mineral and crystal collection in Kreševo. A fair for minerals, rocks, fossils, and precious and semi-precious stones is also held every year, bringing together exhibitors and visitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad.

In Deževice, the Shrine of St. James of the Marches attracts numerous pilgrims and visitors. The parish organizes spiritual activities, workshops, and events there. Geocamps and outdoor activities are offered for children and young people in Kreševo, where they learn about geology, searching for minerals, and nature conservation.

Getting There

Kreševo is connected to Sarajevo by two road links, including a newer paved route via Lepenica. The older paved route via Kiseljak is 48 km long.
