Holiday apartment in Oštrelj: Nature, History and Winter Sports

Oštrelj is located on a pass between the Klekovača and Osječenica mountains, surrounded by deciduous and coniferous forests. The village lies at an altitude of approximately 1,040 m. Mediterranean and continental climatic conditions meet here; together with the high altitude, they give Oštrelj the character of a health resort. The M14.2 main road between Bosanski Petrovac and Drvar runs through the village.

Culture

Titov voz, which has been a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2013, is at the centre of the area's history. On 8 October 1942, Josip Broz Tito and the Supreme Headquarters of the NOV POJ arrived in Oštrelj from the direction of Mliništa and took up residence there in a small train formation. The municipality of Bosanski Petrovac implemented a project to preserve and develop the national monument. This included illuminating the area up to the train, cleaning the public area, and cleaning and painting the locomotive and carriages. The site was supplemented with a bench, a shelter, waste bins and a fence.

A Roman milestone in Oštrelj is also one of the cultural and historical sights in the area around Bosanski Petrovac. The narrow-gauge forestry railway organised by Otto von Steinbeis provides a broader railway-historical context. It comprised the 232 km Prijedor–Srnetica–Knin route as well as around 400 km of forest lines, 33 locomotives and approximately 500 freight and 60 passenger carriages.

Landscape and Trails

The Lom primeval forest is located near Oštrelj on Klekovača, 7 km from the village. There are trails there for researchers and adventure travellers. Marked hiking trails lead through the area directly in Oštrelj. Tours and hikes can be organised with experienced members of a mountaineering club. A marked forest trail route leads to the Oštrelj summit; at a junction, a clearly steeper marked variant branches off.

An approximately 3.5 km circular route is also available to the summit. In addition, there is an easier route of approximately 2 km and a more demanding ascent of around 1.2 km with 357 metres of elevation gain. The different trail lengths and the stated elevation difference are therefore just as much part of the trail network as the marked steeper branch.

Winter and Nature

There are numerous cross-country ski trails, opportunities for horse-drawn sleigh rides and hiking trails in the immediate vicinity of the Oštrelj winter sports centre. The winter sports centre includes a 715 m-long recreational ski slope, a 630 m-long sports ski slope, a 15 m-high ski jump, a toboggan run, a platter lift and a baby lift. At the same time, the Oštrelj ski centre has not been fully operational in recent years. It is operated under a private concession and is intended to be restored.

The area around Oštrelj is home primarily to wolves, foxes, bears, capercaillies and hares. With the support of a hunting association, hunting tourism is being developed in Bosanski Petrovac and beyond. The trail network in the area also includes cycling routes; rides with experienced cyclists are organised in cooperation with an extreme sports association.
