Holiday apartment in Risovac: springs and caves in the Grmeč Mountains

Risovac is located at the extreme northwestern end of Petrovačko Polje in the Grmeč Mountains. There are approximately 100 springs distributed throughout the area. The springs form larger flowing waters known as “ponornice” and flow from west to east or southeast. Risovac is considered the third ponor zone of Petrovačko Polje. Landscape

Several named elevations are located in the vicinity of Risovac. Paleški Vrh is a peak, while Lisina is a mountain. Kekića Vrh and Omeragin Vršić are also located in the surrounding area; both are peaks. The different designations range from mountain to peak, clearly classifying each of the named landforms.

Two caves lie beneath the prominent rock formation Risovačka greda, an extension of the Grmeč Mountains. The cave in the Vodice area is located at an elevation of 600 metres and was once a sinkhole. The second cave serves as a ponor year-round and collects water even during the driest periods.

Nature

The fauna and flora of the Risovac–Bosanska Krupa area are also associated with specific species. The European yew (Taxus baccata), yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea) and brown bear (Ursus arctos) are each recorded as species occurring there. The three names thus represent different areas of the documented natural environment: a tree, a plant and a wild animal.

Culture and history

Among the abandoned houses of Risovac, čatrnje have been preserved as landmarks. These are concrete cisterns. Their presence stands alongside a settlement history reaching back to the time of the Roman Empire.

The residents who remain in Risovac maintain historical traditions of agriculture and forestry. Thus, the local history brings together a long settlement tradition and inherited forms of economic activity with the area's distinctive natural features of springs, ponors and caves.
