Stari grad Cazin and its history

The old town of Stari grad Cazin lies on a hill above the present-day city. Its inner courtyard has a trapezoidal medieval layout. The town mosque stands within the walls; it was built in 1879 and ceremonially reopened after restoration on 2 November 1883. The old town and its mosque were declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005.

Another historic building is located in the centre of Cazin: the House of Ibro Alagić lies behind the city administration building. The house is considered one of the oldest residential buildings in Cazin; based on its construction, the materials used and the workmanship of its structural elements, its construction is dated to the first half of the 19th century during Ottoman rule.

The house is also associated with memories of 20th-century history. Nurija and Devleta Pozderac hid persecuted Jews there. In 2012, Yad Vashem posthumously awarded them the title of Righteous Among the Nations. Josip Broz Tito also visited the head of the household at Nurija Pozderac’s house.

Natural heritage and destinations in the surrounding area

Near Cazin lies Kula Radetina, a medieval and Ottoman fortification in a natural setting with a cave and the Radetina stream. The kula, the stream and the surrounding natural heritage together form a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The terrain is steep and difficult to access; the entrance is practically inaccessible because the former access corridor has since been destroyed.

The old town of Stari grad Ostrožac in the surrounding area offers several cultural events. The “Ostrožac” Sculpture Colony takes place in June as an open-air sculpture workshop. The old town hosts historical and contemporary art exhibitions, often accompanied by educational programmes. An open-air cinema is also held there every year, allowing visitors to watch film screenings on the old stone walls.

Chestnuts feature prominently in several events in Cazin. The ChestNUT Fest celebrates the chestnut as a native plant species of the region. The beekeepers’ association of the Municipality of Cazin also draws on this regional speciality and launched chestnut honey in 2010 as a protected product of controlled origin and quality under its own brand.

At “Lito moje medeno”, visitors can taste local products and meet local producers. For several years, the event has brought producers, craftspeople and lovers of local products together in Cazin. Cazinski sajam includes a festival of local products such as honey, milk and medicinal herbs.

Cycling route with historical connections

The “Stazama Cazinske bune” cycling route is 16 kilometres long. It consists of 80 percent paved roads and 20 percent gravel paths and is suitable for all types of bicycles. The event of the same name was held for the third time in 2025 and developed into a tradition commemorating historical events from the 1950s.
