Discover Velika Kladuša: History, Culture and Trails
Velika Kladuša, also known as Cladussa, was fortified during frequent Ottoman incursions into the region. In 1633, the Ottoman authorities renovated the Kladuša fortress and stationed a permanent garrison there, under the command of the captain of Ostrožac.
History
The centre of Velika Kladuša was surrounded by a high, sturdy circular defensive wall; a round tower facing the foreland was part of this complex. The Stari grad–Velika Kladuša complex was handed over to the Municipality of Velika Kladuša for administration and use, with the aim of protecting it and preserving it from further deterioration.
If you are travelling with children and would like to combine different interests, you can consider historical details, structures and events as separate themes. This leaves room for different daily rhythms without prescribing a fixed order.
