Kulen Vakuf is a historic town built on an island.

Culture

Kulen Vakuf was founded through the construction of the Sultan Ahmed I Mosque between 1603 and 1617. The Una National Park's official excursion programme includes a visit to the Sultan Ahmed I Mosque as well as a short rafting route on the Una from the Kulen Vakuf fire station to Buk Kulen Vakuf. During a guided tour of Kulen Vakuf, the special features of Krajina carpets are presented. In the Muslim cemetery west of Havala, the tomb inscriptions are still clearly visible today; they are written in Arabic script and the Turkish language.

History

Above the village of Ostrovica near Kulen Vakuf lies Ostrovica Castle, a large medieval structure. Opposite Ostrovica, on the other side of the Una Valley in which Kulen Vakuf lies, are the ruins of Havala Fortress. Havala Fortress historically overlooked the bridge across the Una and Kulen Vakuf. A branch of the Una may have been excavated by hand on the southern side of the town.

Water

The 1.5 km-long “Kulen Vakuf” fishing area extends along the Una through the settlement. It runs from the waterfall 150 m upstream from the large bridge in Kulen Vakuf to the bridge leading across the Una to the villages of Klisa and Ostrovica. Fishing area 1B “Kulen Vakuf” in Una National Park is reserved exclusively for fly fishing. The published price list of Una National Park includes a section for rafting, kayaking or canoeing on the Martin Brod–Kulen Vakuf route. A rafting stage on the Una also begins above Kulen Vakuf.

Routes

One provider in Kulen Vakuf offers bicycles for the 6 km-long paved road towards Martin Brod. A marked and safe hiking trail leads from the centre of Kulen Vakuf to the tower of Ostrovica. Kulen Vakuf is designated as one of the two developed visitor zones of Una National Park.

When comparing holiday apartments in Kulen Vakuf, check the exact location, accommodation type and occupancy on the respective listing pages. The included services, price components, and booking and cancellation conditions can likewise be checked before booking. For an accommodation, it is helpful to read these points directly in the specific listing rather than assuming its features. Compare the displayed options at your leisure and decide which offer you would like to examine more closely based on the published conditions. Reviewing these fields keeps the selection transparent and avoids assumptions about an individual offer. Also check whether the stated occupancy and accommodation type are clearly shown for your own travel period, which price components are listed separately, and under what conditions changes or cancellations are possible; the information in the respective opened listing remains authoritative. Included services should also be explicitly stated before you assess the conditions of an offer.
