Mato Grosso can be explored through very different experiences: a road through the Pantanal, the rock formations of Chapada dos Guimarães, historic places and cuisine with regional character. This variety can help you decide what to focus your trip on—and which part of the destination to look in for a vacation rental.

Pantanal: Routes and Wildlife Watching

The Estrada-Parque Transpantaneira connects Poconé with Porto Jofre and is considered one of the most important tourist corridors in the Mato Grosso Pantanal. The route is around 145 kilometers long and crosses 125 bridges. These figures alone give it a different character from a single viewpoint: the route itself is an important part of finding your way around the Pantanal.

Between Poconé and Barão de Melgaço lies Encontro das Águas State Park. It protects around 109,000 hectares of biodiversity and is one of the important areas in the Pantanal for jaguar watching; the area also offers favorable conditions for birdwatching. In Barão de Melgaço, the Sesc Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) protects around 108,000 hectares between the Cuiabá and São Lourenço rivers. The two protected areas have different focuses: jaguar and bird watching take center stage at Encontro das Águas, while the RPPN is characterized by its location between two rivers.

Access to the headquarters of Pantanal Matogrossense National Park is by river: from Porto Jofre, at the end of the Transpantaneira in Poconé, it is 150 kilometers downstream on the Rio Cuiabá. Visits to this park are authorized only in exceptional cases and require prior permission. The nature experiences mentioned there include bird resting and roosting sites at Baía do Burro, as well as wildlife watching from a boat. So do not plan for this option based on the same assumptions as an ordinary visit to a freely accessible viewpoint.

Chapada dos Guimarães: Waterfalls and Rock Formations

In the wider region, Chapada dos Guimarães National Park offers several different places to visit. The MT-251 connects Cuiabá and Chapada dos Guimarães and is the main access road to the national park. The park is open daily, except on December 24 and 25 and December 31 and January 1. Individual visitor areas have their own opening hours and rules; check the information before your visit.

At the Cachoeira Véu de Noiva viewpoint, the self-guided round trip is about 620 meters each way, or 1.2 kilometers in total, and is rated easy. Another option is the Circuito das Cachoeiras, which follows the Córrego Independência to four waterfalls and a natural pool where swimming is permitted. Cachoeirinha and Cachoeira dos Namorados are other attractions open to visitors; swimming is possible at one of the waterfalls.

The landscape also offers striking contrasts. Cidade de Pedra lies on the edge of the Planalto dos Guimarães; from there, views extend across sandstone cliffs, ruiniform landforms and veredas. At 850 meters high, Morro de São Jerônimo is one of the highest points in the national park and offers panoramic views. In Vale do Rio Claro, you can swim in the river and access Crista do Galo, an inselberg formed by the retreat of the Escarpa do Planalto dos Guimarães. At Morro da Crista do Galo, you can also enjoy 360-degree views over the valley and swimming pools in the Rio Claro.

If traveling by public transport, your options are more limited: access to the national park this way is restricted to the Véu de Noiva visitor area. Vans run every 1.5 hours between the bus stations in Cuiabá and Chapada dos Guimarães, in both directions. Since transport services can change, it is best to check the connection before your trip.

History and Cuisine in Mato Grosso

Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade combines historical landmarks with scenery. It was the first capital of Mato Grosso and is crossed by the Rio Guaporé. The mountains of Serra Ricardo Franco State Park can be seen in the background. Historic buildings in the town include the Ruínas da Antiga Igreja Matriz, whose construction began in 1771, and the Palácio dos Capitães Generais, dating from 1752. The nearby Cachoeira do Jatobá is one of the main attractions of Serra Ricardo Franco State Park. At 252 meters, it is described as the highest waterfall in Mato Grosso.

One dish also represents regional identity: Maria Isabel is made with dried meat and rice and was registered in 2011 as a typical symbol of Mato Grosso. For a trip that brings together nature and culture, it offers another way to experience the destination, alongside its routes, waterfalls and historic places.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Accommodation

The places and experiences described here offer different kinds of travel. If you are interested in the Transpantaneira and the Pantanal, you can focus your vacation rental search in this part of the destination; if waterfalls, rock formations and viewpoints are your priority, look instead at options around Chapada dos Guimarães. Vila Bela offers another focus, with its history and setting on the Rio Guaporé. Choose your accommodation based on the experiences that matter to your trip, rather than treating these different locations as interchangeable day trips.
