Discover Campo Verde: Culture, Nature and History
Accommodation in Campo Verde
Campo Verde offers a range of reasons to visit: historic houses and a museum in Capim Branco, traces of early settlement and striking rocky landscapes. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment or house, you can consider which of these discoveries you’d like to shape your stay—cultural history, nature or insights into local life.
Cultural History in Capim Branco
In Capim Branco, the Museu da História de Campo Verde is housed in a replica of the first telegraph station in the state of Mato Grosso. Cândido Rondon built the station in 1896. The museum’s collection includes objects from the Capim Branco community, as well as items illustrating the origins of the municipality of Campo Verde. The history of the community and the founding of the municipality are thus presented side by side.
Capim Branco is a historic community with centuries-old houses built during the development of the region in the 19th century. Another symbol of the community’s faith is the wooden cross on Morro da Cruz: local resident Pedro Boleiro erected it in 1933; it later became a symbol of faith and a pilgrimage site for the community. For travellers interested in regional history, the museum, houses and cross tell different stories without needing to be combined into a single historical site.
Rocky Landscapes and Nature Around Campo Verde
Campo Verde’s natural surroundings include hills, mountain ranges, rivers, streams, lakes, caves and rock formations. There are several waterfalls around Capim Branco. Visits are only possible with permission from the private landowners. This restriction is important if waterfalls are among your desired experiences: you’ll need to obtain permission to visit them.
Morro da Rapadura is home to a small archaeological site with rock inscriptions that point to human settlement in the region more than 4,500 years ago. Another rocky landscape is Cidade de Pedra, in the area of Agrovila João Ponce de Arruda, about 25 kilometres from Campo Verde. Its ravine is 600 metres long, 80 metres wide and 50 metres deep. These measurements give an idea of the scale of this formation.
The Aroe Jari cave, also known as Caverna do Francês, is also located in the area around Campo Verde, on Fazenda Água Fria, 49 kilometres from the centre of Campo Verde. The Almiscarada waterfall, with a drop of about 10 metres, is also on Fazenda Água Fria. You can take these distances into account when considering the location of your holiday rental: the town centre is the reference point for the cave, while Cidade de Pedra is about 25 kilometres from Campo Verde.
Visits and Experiences in the Area
Visitor facilities in Capim Branco include restaurants, a fee-paying fishing facility and a bathing area with a swimming pool and relaxation area. Together with the historic houses and museum, these make the area a possible focus for a visit if you’d like to combine culture with a stay near visitor facilities. Separately, permission from the private landowners is required to visit the waterfalls in Capim Branco.
The Trilha dos Alimentos project is designed specifically for children, teenagers and young people, combining leisure with cultural and historical education. Visits to a farm are offered at Assentamento Santo Antônio da Fartura. Visitors can sample and purchase coffee, sweets and other foods made by the owners. These offerings have different focuses: the project combines leisure and learning, while the farm visit centres on locally produced food.
