Novo Mundo can be explored through Parque Estadual do Cristalino and its river landscapes. The Rio Cristalino crosses the park and is navigable along its entire length—despite numerous submerged rocks and small rapids. The Rio Nhandu is also part of the area’s natural character: it is described as a river with potential for adventure tourism, sport fishing, and sightseeing.

A park landscape between forest and savanna

Parque Estadual do Cristalino is located in the Amazon biome and extends across Alta Floresta and Novo Mundo. It belongs to the “Proteção Integral” category and was established to protect areas of priority for the biological diversity of the Amazon biome, expand scientific knowledge, and promote ecotourism based on the quality of its natural attractions. A rapid ecological assessment in 2002 classified the park as highly biodiverse.

Its vegetation comprises several distinct types: 28% is wooded savanna, known as Cerradão, and 27% is dense submontane rainforest with an emergent canopy. In addition, 20% is submontane seasonal semideciduous forest with an emergent canopy, 16% is open savanna without gallery forest, and 9% is open submontane rainforest with lianas. For nature enthusiasts, this creates a varied picture that cannot be reduced to a single forest or landscape type.

The terrain also varies, ranging from flat areas through gently to strongly undulating areas to mountainous terrain. Water also shapes the area’s layout. 97% of the park lies within the sub-basins of the Rio Cristalino (42%), the Rio Rochedo (40%), and the Rio Nhandu (15%). Vegetation, terrain, and rivers thus offer different perspectives on the same protected area—from its biological diversity to the waterways that cross it.

Novo Mundo is also home to the private Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Cristalino. It too is located in the Amazon biome and belongs to the “Proteção Integral” category. It is a separate protected area alongside the state-run Parque Estadual do Cristalino.

Rivers as natural features and points of reference

The Rio Cristalino combines a distinctive river character with its location in the park: its entire length is navigable, even though numerous submerged rocks and small rapids occur along its course. The Rio Nhandu offers a different point of interest. Adventure tourism, sport fishing, and sightseeing are mentioned as possible interests there; this describes potential, not a specific offering.

For getting around on land, the MT-419 is a point of reference: from Novo Mundo’s administrative center, it leads to the Rio Nhandu, which forms the eastern boundary of Parque Estadual Cristalino. The park can be reached by water from the Rio Teles Pires. There are several suitable places there to launch small boats; a trip can continue as far as the mouth of the Rio Cristalino. The road, rivers, and park boundary thus describe different geographic reference points, without implying a specific travel time.

Travel interests and choosing accommodation

The Lago Municipal is also associated with a specific sporting event: the 3rd municipal beach volleyball tournament took place there on May 23 and 24, 2025. A new sand court for beach volleyball was officially inaugurated at the same location on those days. This is a dated glimpse of local sporting activity, separate from the park’s nature and river themes.

If you are looking for a vacation rental in Novo Mundo, you can start by considering which aspect will shape your trip: the habitats and conservation aims of Parque Estadual do Cristalino, the rivers and their geographic significance, or an interest in sporting events such as the beach volleyball tournament at Lago Municipal.
