Culture and Local History

Estremera is home to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, a 16th-century Renaissance building that was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1982.

Of Estremera’s numerous former hermitages, the Ermita-cripta del Santo Sepulcro is the only one that has survived; it is located in the town’s cemetery. It was excavated into a hill during the last two decades of the 16th century and displays Herrerian design features.

Its layout resembles a cave: three underground naves and three openings allowing light in from outside define the structure. After the centuries-old structure collapsed, the Ermita-cripta was rebuilt in the 1950s, while the Renaissance façade was preserved.

The church also has an organ completed by Pedro Liborna Echavarría in 1716. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament contains a Plateresque altarpiece from the Toledo school.

The Casa de las Columnas, also known as Casa de Camacho, was a palace with a late-16th-century Renaissance portal and notable wrought-iron balconies.

Historic Town Centre

Plaza Juan Carlos I was laid out in the second half of the 16th century. Its quadrangular layout is bordered by the church and town hall, forming a historic town centre.

It includes a small park with trees, benches and a fountain, providing a place for residents and visitors to relax.

Landscape and Trails

The Tagus River crosses Estremera. Its banks are lined by a fertile vega, whose greenery contrasts with the predominant ochre and grey of the rest of the landscape. The Estremera Canal runs from east to west through the entire municipal area.

About one kilometre south of Estremera lie the remains of part of the route known as “La ruta de los 40 días”. The present-day route of “La ruta de los 40 días” is paved, signposted and equipped with rest areas along its course.

Numerous routes through nature start at La Playita de Estremera. The Camino de Uclés is 145 kilometres long and comprises eleven stages; it connects the monastery of the same name in the province of Cuenca with the Iglesia de Santiago in Madrid and passes through Estremera.

Archaeology and Festivals

The archaeological site of Estremera preserves Bronze Age remains of communities that lived in caves and huts by rivers. It includes engravings on the walls of some galleries, as well as complete or fragmented ceramic vessels placed on natural ledges.

The Fiestas Patronales de Estremera take place in October in honour of the Santísimo Cristo Sepultado and Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. They include processions, cultural events, verbenas and bullfighting events.
