Torrejón de Velasco – Holiday apartments between castle and nature

The Castillo de Puñonrostro is a late-medieval castle in Torrejón de Velasco dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its rectangular floor plan measures 37 × 21 metres; the complex has ten towers in total. The castle is home to a colony of lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) estimated at around 50 breeding pairs.

Culture and history

The Castillo de Torrejón de Velasco was temporarily used as a prison during the early modern period. In 1775, a soap factory and a wool-spinning mill were established there. The Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir is a 15th-century church protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; its defining architectural elements include reddish-brown brick façades, masonry panels and buttresses.

The Ermita de San Nicasio is the pilgrimage chapel dedicated to the patron saint of Torrejón de Velasco and was already in existence at the beginning of the 17th century. Beside the Ermita de San Isidro stands the Fuente de la Teja, dating from 1898 and formerly used as a watering place for livestock.

Natural history and nature

Because of the quantity, quality and diversity of its fossils, Cerro de los Batallones is considered one of the world’s most significant Miocene fossil sites. As a Bien de Interés Cultural, it is protected in the category of a palaeontological zone. Cerro de los Batallones is also included in the Plan de Yacimientos Visitables of the Community of Madrid.

At Cerro de los Batallones, it is possible to reconstruct an ecosystem that existed around 10 million years ago and included a large freshwater lake in the central part of the Madrid Basin. Traditions and routes

The Encharcamientos del arroyo Guatén are a 10-hectare protected wetland in the natural area of Torrejón de Velasco. Visitors can hike and watch birds there; at the same time, the area is botanically and faunistically significant.

A six-kilometre section of CiclaMadrid connects Torrejón de Velasco with Cubas de la Sagra. The San Nicasio celebrations include a procession in which the patron saint is carried from the Ermita de San Nicasio to the Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir. The traditional Romería de San Isidro is celebrated in the picnic area next to the Ermita de San Isidro.
