Discover Winnebago: Nature Trails, Lakes and Culture
Accommodation in Winnebago
Winnebago combines wide-open landscapes, lakes and varied trails with impressive cultural attractions in Oshkosh and Neenah. Those looking for a holiday apartment can plan their trip around their preferred focus: active days on nature trails, water activities on Lake Winnebago or excursions to museums, historic homes and family-friendly attractions.
Between the Fox River, Lakes and Nature Trails
A prominent starting point for exploring the landscape of Winnebago County is the Wiouwash State Trail. Its route begins in downtown Oshkosh on the Fox River and runs north through Winnebago and Outagamie counties to Hortonville. Along the way, the Fox River, Lake Butte des Morts, grassland prairies, wooded areas and farmland alternate. In summer, walking, hiking, cycling and horseback riding are possible; in winter, the trail is used for snowmobiling, fat biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The Mascoutin Valley State Trail runs for 5.3 miles through southwestern Winnebago County and continues into Green Lake and Fond du Lac counties. The Tribal Heritage Crossing offers a shorter, clearly defined route: The paved causeway trail is one mile long and crosses Lake Butte des Morts. At its northern end, it connects with the Wiouwash State Trail, and at its southern end with the Oshkosh Riverwalk.
Active Days and Quiet Natural Areas
The county has five natural areas offering opportunities for hiking, cycling, picnicking, fishing, birdwatching, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Coughlin Community Natural Area has about one mile of grass trails in a 35-acre prairie. The Waukau Creek Nature Preserve covers 64 acres and is home to the only flowing stream in Winnebago County.
The Waukau Dam Mountain Bike Trail is an interesting option for mountain biking days. The three-mile singletrack runs along steep slopes and through deep ravines. It is open for riding year-round, but in winter conditions only fat bikes are permitted; use remains weather-dependent. The Lasley Point Archaeological Site combines nature and history: It marks the site of a Oneota village that existed between 1200 and 1500 AD. Interpretive trails lead through the forest, which provides habitat for wildflowers, small game, songbirds and mammals.
Water Activities on Lake Winnebago
Asylum Point Park is located on Lake Winnebago and encompasses a shoreline landscape with wetlands and prairie. A boat ramp provides access to the water; kayaking is possible in summer and ice fishing in winter. Asylum Point Lighthouse stands on a small island accessible via a footbridge. The lighthouse itself is closed to the public.
The Deppe Wildlife Area is a 373-acre wetland and grassland area in western Winnebago County, with about 80 acres of restored prairie. It offers opportunities for bird and wildlife watching, canoeing, fishing, kayaking, hiking, cross-country skiing and other experiences in nature. The access route leads south of Winneconne via County D, Eureka Road and Haase Road.
Culture and Family Experiences in Oshkosh and Neenah
The region also offers a wide variety of cultural experiences. In Oshkosh, the EAA Aviation Museum showcases more than 200 historic aircraft and exhibits from all eras of aviation. The KidVenture Gallery complements the offering with 16 interactive exhibits and a half-scale model of an F-22. At the Paine Art Center and Gardens, families can explore the Children’s Garden; the art center also displays more than 1,000 works of art.
The Historic Sawyer Home, built in 1908, and the Grand Opera House, which opened on August 9, 1883, and was designed by local architect William Waters, offer historical insights. The Sawyer Home has housed the Oshkosh Public Museum since 1924; its interiors were designed and furnished by Tiffany Studios of New York. The Grand presents public and educational performances, community theater, youth events and free community events as part of an annual program operating on 125 days.
In Neenah, the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass presents glass paperweights, German drinking vessels, Victorian art glass, contemporary glass sculptures and temporary exhibitions. The Glass Studio offers glass classes and camps for young people and adults. Historic mansions of paper barons around Riverside Park and Kimberly Point Park form an architectural tour along Lake Winnebago and the Fox River.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip
When searching for a holiday apartment, you can use the focus of your days as a guide: Nature trails and natural areas are ideal for an active travel itinerary, while museums, historic buildings and family attractions complement cultural excursions. Menominee Park in Oshkosh combines fishing, boating, paved walking and cycling paths, a free zoo, a beach, train rides, and kayak and SUP rentals. The Oshkosh Farmers Market takes place outdoors in summer and indoors in winter, offering seasonal food, handicrafts, ready-to-eat dishes, live music and themed events.
